illustration friday (spent)

This week I am a bit preoccupied with the fact that my cardiac pacemaker battery is running out of juice (power), and that I need to have surgery soon to get it replaced. So when the new IF topic was announced, I naturally thought of "spent batteries." That, and the fact that I've been thinking a lot about rabbits as a theme for my next New Year card (2011 will be the year of the rabbit), resulted in this image. The words are a parody of the ubiquitous American dairy industry ad "Got Milk?" Yes, I know, I should have drawn a cuter bunny. This one is heavy-set and overly serious.... I guess it takes after me.

  1. Hi Debbie! I love your work, and yes this cute rabbit looks serious but still nice.
Hope all go very good for you!

  2. Debbie,

I like your bunny. He/she reminds me of the wild brown rabbits in Florida. Take care of your health soon, please.

  3. Wow Debbie, my husband has a pacemaker/defibrillator and we were just discussing the other day how much longer the battery will last.I hope the op. goes well, it is a minor procedure I understand compared to when they put the leads in originally.
Your illustration is lovely and inventive as usual.
In Australia we have a series of TV advertisements featuring the 'Energizer' bunny selling batteries, your bunny is much more serious and lifelike. (Just shows not everything that comes out of Japan has to be kawaii!) :o)

  4. I love all your works, even the serious bunny, we don't have to be hippity-hop the whole time.
    Take care.

  5. Great illustration. I love the way this all fits together; the way your interpretation of the IF subject is linked to your personal experiences and the influence of the media (product ads) in our everyday lives.

Thank you for introducing me to Etegami too.

  6. Maybe you can suggest replacing with rechargeable battery to avoid the need for future surgeries? A solar panel? Wishing you the best. Nice bunny.

  7. It's a wonderful bunny, very disapproving, which is how most bunnies look in real life! Very apt with the battery connection too as here in the UK Duracell batteries use toy rabbits in their advertising. Thanks for reminding me that next year is Year of the Rabbit, rabbits are the only animal I can draw! Good luck with your surgery.

  9. Someone should invent a battery that can be recharged from outside the skin. Any entrepeneurs out there? Not me, I don't even know how to spell entre.....

  10. Thank you all for the kind comments and well-wishes.

Several people have mentioned the Duracell/Energizer ads featuring rabbits. I've never seen these ads and was amazed at the coincidence.

I do recall a battery ad with a cymbal-clapping toy monkey. I can't remember if it was from Japanese TV or the US. Is that from the same series of ads, I wonder?
